Driver Golf Tips

Get the most out of your oversized 460cc driver

The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off a flat face than balls in the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Today’s technology has come a long way from the persimmon woods of the past. The legal limit for the size of these new drivers has been set under the rules of golf at 460cc. Manufacturers are using titanium and graphite composites in their driver designs and are testing  new shapes to promote higher launch.

The lofts of drivers are made now with more loft and the graphite shafts are more stable in the tip giving more consistency for direction. Below are tips to increase launch and decrease spin rate, thus increasing distance.

Ball Position and tee height: Tee the ball off the left heel and use a large tee as these new clubs have deep faces.

Hit the ball on the upswing: The ball should be hit on the upswing, that being as you swing the club to the bottom of your swing (apex) the ball will be hit past this point. This will lead to higher launch and lower spin rate.

Hit the ball on the upswing.

Set up to hit the ball on the centre of the face: Golfers tend to set up with the ball not positioned in the middle of the face due to the club being so big and poor habits when aligning to a target. Set up and check the positioning by placing the club in the address position and have someone hold the club in this position and then check to see where the ball is aligned. You will be amazed by how many golfers get this simple task wrong.

At impact try to smash the tee: Focus on smashing the tee; this will help in hitting just above the sweet spot which reduces the spin and launches the ball higher. Think of a baseball pitcher that throws a knuckle ball, where the ball does not spin much and comes out faster

Shaft technology: Shafts are a very important part of the make up of your driver. When buying clubs the shaft flex and kick point will play an important part in maximizing distance and accuracy.  The shaft flex will depend on the speed you generate while the kick point affects the trajectory the ball will come out. These days’ shaft manufacturers offer these choices. Tip stiff shafts will launch the ball lower opposed to a mid tip kick point shaft (higher launch).  Popular shaft manufacturers such as Aldila, Fujikura, UST and Grafalloy offer these options in their shaft models.
